What Helps You
What helps you fight the urge to harm for? Me there are 5 main things that help me.
1. Rubber bands
- you can write things on them such as bible vs. or other helpful sayings
2. Drawing where I want to harm with a red marker
- I have to use a marker because if I use a pen I will use it to harm
3. Using some thing called the butterfly method
- you draw a butterfly where you want to harm, name it and care for it by not harming. If you harm its dies ( sounds dumb but it has really helped me I have all kinds of colors that I use)
4. Keep a daily log of my feelings and my triggers
- I start one at the request of my counselor and didn’t think that it was going to help any I thought it was a waste of time but it has helped
5. This website
- knowing that I m not the only one having feelings like this has helped. Also by reading what others say I am better able to tell how I feel

Re: What Helps You
This website - I agree, it's such a big help
For me, crying really helps...it gets my emotions out and gives me something to do.

Re: What Helps You
--Just learning how to get my emotions out and be verbal about them and not stuffing them has helped me tremendously.
--Realizing that it's ok to cry is another one for me. Even though I don't like to cry still, at times you just have to give yourself permission to and it's ok.
--Spending time praising God through music is another thing that helps me. Even when I don't feel like praising, singing it anyway is a must.
--Spending time in prayer, laying it all out for God has helped me as well. I can let him know if I'm angry and tell him exactly what I'm feeling and thinking because he knows it all anyway, whats the sense in stuffing it.
--Calling a friend who can help me put things into perspective.
--Being around people even when I don't feel like being around people. Even if I am miserable when I'm around them, at least I'm with them and not alone where I would have a greater temptation to SI.

A few other things that have/are help/helping
Doing Impluse control logs ( they are used in the SAFE program)
and
It sound really childish when I told my counselor about it but she thought that it was a great idae .. Making a bead bracelet. For every week that I was SI free I got three beads. If I SI I lost all my beads. When I said something about it I really didnt think that I was going to do it or that it would even help.I like my beads lol so now when I feel triggered I think about how Id have to give them up if I hard. They are also a good way to keep count of how long you havent harmed. As well as give you something to hold in you hands and play with when you are triggered.

No silly, I meant when you finish your fourth one, you could start a brand new necklace. Not combine the bracelets into a necklace.

Re: What Helps You
I have a sorta random thing that I just found that helps me.
Whenever I get the urge, I just go brush my teeth for a few minutes.
By the time I am done scrubbin my teeth, I usually feel better.
And my mouth feels all clean
Lol. Just a random idea

Re: What Helps You
I listen to music... Usually Skillet or something of that sort.
Or I go for a jog a few times around the block with my iPod.

Re: What Helps You
Avril Lavigne is a good artist to listen to if you just need to let loose with some anger. I listen to her sometimes while I'm working out.
Re: What Helps You
I like spending time with my dogs. They can help with loneliness.
Guitar also helps, and doing art. And exercise, I like running and swimming!

what helps me is running with all i've got, til i'm out of breath and don't think i can do anymore, then walking for a few minutes, and then running again, and keeping on repeating this cycle til i feel better and know i'm safer from myself. also taking a cold shower helps

What Helps!
For me it's always talking from my first SI epsiode I got so scared and ashamed that I went to a crisis center in my community and thats how I ended up in a residental treatment facility for a few days. It helped alot being there. So I guess alot helps me
Talking with a professional
Music Music and more Music i find music that speaks to me
Writing
I was working out before class twice a week in what our school calls a gym. It's not much to anybody but me I miss the gym
Im hoping this site will help too!
ATM I don't have alot to say but I think this is good start. I use to have a safety plan but I never copied it in my journal so I don't remember what it said.
