the real meaning of fasting

I am currently in seminary and in class tonight we spent a couple hours on the topic and self-denial and fasting. Now of course having had anorexia this was particularily interesting and I know that I had many different feelings regarding this subject than my classsmates.

One thing I found that I wanted to share with you girls was that fasting is the Christian discipline of Starving Sin. NOT starving ourselves but starving out sin in order to hear from God during an intense spiritual activity. This self-denial is actually a time for self-illumination. So if at any time we fast for the goal of losing weight we are out of order with God's plan. Skipping a meal should never be done unless it is during a time of seeking God and God will only speak to us if we are fasting for the reasons described in the Bible.
