Break my heart dear lord tear the barriers down

This poem is about a person struggle I have. For a long time I haven’t let God all the way in, and I’m always willing to give him 95%, but that extra 5% I just can’t let go of. There are also times that my sin get’s in the way of God, and it causes me to build a wall around my heart.


Come on In

Lord, I am so glad you’re here,
But sorry you can’t come too near to me,
Cause you see I need to keep you somewhat far,
So you can’t see these scars,
Even though you know me left and right,
I’m scared to bring my inequalities into the light,
So I hide in the night, And I’ll scream and put up a fight
If you take another step this way,
So just stay where you are, cause you can only come so far
Before the walls come up, and my heart becomes tough,
Cause I don’t want to deal with that heart wrenching stuff.

Cause it’s better to be numb, and my eyes to be dry,
Than to feel the guilt, and let myself cry,
Lord, I want you to come in,
But my sin is blocking the door,
And I’ll give you more, but I won’t give it all,
At least not today, I’ll give you 95%,
Cause that’s still and A,
And 100% is too much anyway.

I’ll jump in the water, But I’ll only go so deep,
And I’ll climb any mountain, as long as it isn’t too steep,
I’ll follow you to the end,
Unless the finish is too far, then it depends,
Cause my faith is on the rocks,
And I’m pretending to be something I’m not,
This distance from you is not okay,
Cause I’m afraid you’ll get bored and walk away.

So I need you to come and get in my face,
And make my heart a place where you can live, help me forgive,
Cause my soul is cold, and my prayers are old,
So just hold me down and break my heart, press restart,
And melt away the snow, and show me pain,
Until tears fall like rain.

I’ll kick and scream, I’ll spit and plea,
But promise you won’t give up on me,
Break through, do what you gotta do, Lock the door behind you,
And throw away the key, bring me to my knees,
It won’t be easy, but if you will,
Please fill this empty space until I’m covered in your grace,
Hold me in your embrace.

Cause I need you in my heart, to tear this wall apart,
It was built on doubt trying to keep you out,
But really it’s sin that’s trapped me in,
I need to break free, please rescue me,
Cause only you can help save me from myself.
